A rising novelist with
uniquely dry style, dry but still scathing satire on reality
Jeong depicts the masses, who are forced to conform to a system in a material society. Confabulation is a psychiatric condition whereby the patient confuses fantasy and reality. Jeong observes the confabulations of a mental patient through the eyes of Park and asks questions about the true nature of storytelling. Our age emphasizes the importance of storytelling and imagination, but in this novella, the patient’s confabulations are treated as the symptoms of a mental illness. Jeong uses a detached tone instead of emotional rhetoric to portray an absurd society and its hidden dark truths.
