How German film regained the world’s attention after the year 2000 

Following the massive reverberations of New German Cinema in the 1970s, German film of the 1980s and 90s failed to receive not only international attention, but domestic attention as well. Without much to boast in terms of artistic or popular value, regular German film could not compete with Hollywood. This book describes how German film experienced a resurgence in the 21st century, and examines the background and details of positive changes made in the German film world.

About author

After completing his undergraduate studies in the Department of German Language Education at Seoul National University, Yun Jong Uk received a BA, MA, and PhD in Media Studies at Philipps University of Marburg in Germany, publishing his doctoral thesis The Feature Films of Ken Loach: the Perspective of Realist Film (Die Spielfilme von Ken Loach: Perspektive eines realistischen Kinos) (2011). He is currently a professor in the German Language and Culture Major of the Department of European Language and Culture at Yeungnam University. His research focuses on European film culture, centered on Germany. His published articles include “The Historical Films of Christian Petzold: an Analysis of Barbara and Phoenix” (2018), “The Filmization of the Other’s Pain: an Analysis of Documentary Film Salt of the Earth” (2016), and “Documentary Drama and Film Realism: an Analysis of Andreas Dresen’s Cloud 9” (2014). He is the author of Foundational Concepts in Film Analysis (2017)
